Concept statement
For this design, the purpose was to create a fabric on which trend art, style, thoughtfulness and effective communication come together. The yellow progressing to red communicates the theme and is furthered by the symbols of emotion spontaneously bursting into life and complexity. It is quite ironic that the theme is illustrated by static yet energetic imagery of a still figure that can be seen upon further thought as the personification of the theme itself through seemingly sporadic emotions that deviate thoughts of the mind to thought of the heart.
Where in the world would you go to and why?
Definitely to Spain. The rich history the Spaniards have is intriguing to me. Some like to go sightseeing at popular tourist destinations and so forth, but I particularly enjoy getting a taste of the real life experienced there by people who live there. The cultural aspects also attract me, namely, football. It is one of my dreams to stand in a Spanish football stadium and watch a game live.
Favourite stuff?
I listen to all sorts of music, fairly eclectic. I do however make an exception for country music which I cannot stand – however I’m all for diversity. I’d say I get into phases of the kind of music I listen to; sometimes hip-hop, rock, classical etc. Right now it would be early to mid ‘90’s sort of stuff. I love my sport, I don’t think I dislike any sports actually. My favourite are definitely Football (soccer) and Basketball with fleeting interests in Rugby and Cricket. The best movie I have ever seen is Crash. I only saw it recently, but it is the deepest movie I have ever seen, absolutely loved it. As far as other movies go though, I usually use them as an excuse to get out with friends I don’t see often or to catch up with people.
Three people you'd take to a desert island?
Firstly, I would definitely take MacGyver. MacGyver can make a hang-glider from garbage bags, matches and super glue, I’m sure a boat out of wood and sand won’t elude him. Secondly, some one entertaining, like Robin Williams to pass the time away with, I’m sure he’d make for great conversation. My Mother would have to be my final pick, the most outstanding person I have met in my life and also the best cook.
What will you be doing in 10 years?
I will be a maxilla facial surgeon. Clearly, this means I am concentrating on my academic studies now and have yet a lot more study to do, however I hope most of all that a little hard work and a lot of determination after ten years will accumulate to a better character, as we always have room for improvement. And as for the simple things in life, I will learn an instrument – something I have always wanted to do.
Why should you win this competition?
The judge’s job is harder than one would suspect, hence this question. Why should I win? There are nine other designs standing by mine that have been voted in the same bracket, this makes it very difficult to even propose that the merits of my design are greater than the others. Instead I will say that, independent of the competition, the amount of time and hard work that has gone in to my numerous attempts and especially the thoughtfulness that went in to them make for what I believe to be not only a good design, but also one that is an effective communicator. As far as the spirit of the competition goes, I have made mostly lengthy comments on designs that I hope will give another perspective on the artist’s ideas and also provide a constructive base for improvement.
