Concept statement
'Go to Bohemia' was inspired by the allure of obscure countries and artistic lifestyles. Bohemia is a little-known province of the Czech Republic. Just as important as physical exploration is traversing psychological boundaries. The term Bohemian was developed in 19th Century France to describe artists, writers and thinkers with unconventional lifestyles. To go to the mind-state that is 'Bohemia' is to explore the breadth of life regardless of society's standards- the most rewarding exploration.
Where in the world would you go to and why?
Killer Question. I would love to be skilled in an exceptional artform by those who truly know and live it. Learning Chinese landscape painting or hanging out at Paris's Montmartre come close but I would go to the design capital Scandinavia for the architecture, glaciers and mountains; learn about the fascinating Viking culture and the beautiful art of ice sculpting to help me on my way to designing an ice hotel.
Favourite stuff?
I love the Velvet Underground and the Icelandic band Mum. Pastimes: Guitar, doodling, designing and sculpting anything- toothpicks, carrots, tables and stones. Movies: Amilie and The Breakfast Club. Book: Thai Die- The comedian Greg Fleet’s beautiful story of travel, love and violence in Cambodia. Mags: Noise, Apathy Man, Get lost and Mad. Person: The physicist Max Plank, simply for having the coolest name in the world. Item: Senior Study microwave.
Three people you'd take to a desert island?
The Spanish architect Gaudi- to take him on in a sand castle competition; Ghandi- seemed like an intelligent bloke and he’d be a fair judge of the said sandcastle competition; and Russell Coit- more for entertainment than survival skills.
What will you be doing in 10 years?
Hmmmmm…. In ten years I see myself highly knowledgeable in Art Deco German Cinema (why not), looking out from my Norweigan ice hotel seeing people feeling beautiful wearing my clothes and making aesthetically stunning and meaningful documentaries which are headlining art festivals:) Or lost and loving it.
Why should you win this competition?
I am proud of my design and believe that it deserves to be worn. The scholarship would be would be an utterly mind-blowing and valued reward. Winning would mean the possibility to digress from a small-town mentality and experience other cultures in my pursuit of making a significant contribution to the design field and attain some sort of edifying integrity. I am inherently artistic and genuinely ache to explore, learn and grow in ways that I haven’t been able to during my 13 years of schooling. I believe in what the Make Your Mark initiative stands for and would be a prime representative to see through such an inspiring endeavour. My entry “Go to Bohemia” was thoughtful, original and crafted from the heart to appeal to teenagers with style, and I believe I achieved this.
